چکیده

Several methods for the assay of pantothenic acid have been reported in the literature. They have been based on the growth response of yeast (l), bacteria (2, 3), and chicks (4, 5) to the vitamin. The relative merits of these methods have been discussed in an earlier paper (3). In a previous publication (6) it was shown that pantothenic acid is one of the growth factors required by Proteus morganii. Subsequent experiments in which synthetic crystalline calcium pantothenate (Merck) was employed in a chemically defined medium indicated that the organism responded to exceedingly low concentrations of this substance; raising the calcium pantothenate level within limits resulted in a corresponding increase in growth. On the basis of this reaction to pantothenate a technique has been developed for its assay. Since the method possesses certain desirable features, its application to routine assays of pantothenic acid in natural materials may be warranted.

Function of pyridoxal phosphate in desulfhydrase systems of Proteus morganii.

It has been reported (1) that cystine is metabolized by resting cells of Proteus vulgaris and Proteus morganii to pyruvate, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide, Toluene-killed cells of P. morganii also carried out the reaction and to a lesser degree attacked homocysteine, yielding hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and some unidentified product. Inasmuch as the use of toluene-killed cells may not obviate ent...

Potent cephalosporinase inhibitors: 7 beta-[2-(1, 3-dithiolan-2-ylidene) acetamido] cephalosporins and related compounds.

Cephalosporins possessing a 1, 3-dithiolane, 1, 3-dithiane, or 1, 3-dithietane ring on their 7 beta-substituents showed potent inhibitory activity against cephaloridine hydrolysis by cephalosporinases purified from proteus morganii, Proteus rettgeri, and Proteus inconstans, which were not inhibited by clavulanic acid, a well-known beta-lactamase inhibitor. The mode of inhibition was competitive...

The secreted hemolysins of Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, and Morganella morganii are genetically related to each other and to the alpha-hemolysin of Escherichia coli.

Secreted hemolysins were extremely common among clinical isolates of Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, and Morganella morganii, and hemolytic activity was either cell associated or cell free. Southern hybridization of total DNA from hemolytic isolates to cloned regions of the Escherichia coli alpha-hemolysin (hly) determinant showed clear but incomplete homology between genes encoding produc...
